Mentoring opportunity

Mentoring for northern writers…

As an emerging writer, it can be difficult to find support or someone who will discuss your work and how you can improve it, as well as offering advice on working towards your goals as a writer.

I’d really like to support other emerging writers, so I’m offering to mentor a writer from an under-represented background from the North of England who is working on their first novel. You should not have an agent or be published already. Ideally I would like to support someone who can’t afford to pay for mentoring at this time.

A bit about me… I’m a debut author from Middlesbrough, my dystopian novel The Disappeared was published by Unbound in 2019. It won a Northern Writers’ Award and was longlisted from The Bath Novel Award and Not the Booker Prize. I also write short stories and flash fiction. I’m probably best qualified to help those writing adult commercial or literary fiction, not YA, children’s fiction or science-fiction and fantasy.

The mentoring will involve:

  • Four one hour sessions via Zoom or Skype where we will discuss your work, goals as a writer and barriers to achieving those goals

  • Review of up to 5,000 words from your work in progress to discuss ideas and any areas you might be struggling with

  • Production of actionable steps to help you work towards your writing goals

  • Sharing of resources that you can use once the sessions are complete

If you are interested in working with me, please send me the following information via the contact form:

  • Your name and email address.

  • 150 – 200 words about you, your goals as a writer and why you would benefit from mentoring. Please also include the town you’re from so I can choose writers from the relevant area.

  • 100 – 200 words about your work in progress and what you would like support with.

  • The first 300 words of your work in progress.

Deadline: Monday 26 April at 5pm

The selected writers will be notified by Friday 7 May. I’ll do my best to get back to everyone who applies whether or not you were successful, but this will depend on how many people get in touch.

Sessions will take place between May and September, at a time to be agreed.

I’m looking forward to reading about your work!
